What do AEO and GEO mean?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) describe making your content easy for AI assistants and AI search features to read, understand and cite. They are labels for a goal, not separate technologies.
What stays the same as SEO?
Most of the basics carry over, because AI tools read the same public web:
- Pages that load fast and can be crawled
- Clear titles, headings and descriptions
- Accurate, specific content written for real questions
- Reputation signals such as reviews and mentions on other sites
What is new?
- Checking that AI answer bots are not blocked in robots.txt
- Writing direct answers near the top of a page, with facts that can be quoted
- Adding structured data so your business details are unambiguous
- Measuring whether assistants mention you, since clicks are no longer the only signal
What should you do first?
Fix the technical basics, make your key pages answer real questions plainly, and then measure. Nobody can promise a result from any of this. The honest goal is to remove obstacles and make your facts easy to find.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO dead because of AI search?
No. AI tools still rely on pages from the open web, and many people still use regular search. The skills overlap heavily.
Do I need a separate tool for AEO?
Not necessarily. A site audit that covers crawling, content, structured data and AI bot access handles most of it.
