What is schema markup?
Schema markup is code that labels the facts on your page, such as your business name, address, or the questions and answers in an FAQ. It is usually added as a small block of JSON-LD. It does not change how your page looks.
Which schema types should you add first?
- Organization: your business name, website, logo and contact details, usually on the home page
- LocalBusiness: if you serve customers at a location, add address, phone and opening hours
- Article: for blog posts and guides, with headline, author and dates
- FAQPage: for pages that genuinely contain questions and answers
What can you expect from schema?
Schema makes your pages eligible for richer search results, but it does not guarantee them. Google has also narrowed which sites get FAQ rich results. The markup still helps machines understand your content.
What rules should you follow?
- Only mark up facts that are visible on the page
- Keep the details accurate and up to date
- Test the page with Google's Rich Results Test before publishing
Frequently asked questions
Where do I put the JSON-LD code?
Inside a script tag of type application/ld+json, in the head or body of the page it describes.
Does schema help with AI search?
It gives AI systems clearer, structured facts about your business. There is no guarantee of citations, but clear data does no harm.
